When should you prune your bay tree?
Bay trees are pruned at two moments during the year, each serving a different purpose. Summer pruning takes place during the growing season, usually from May onwards. At this time, the strongest shoots are cut back to maintain a neat outline. The stronger the shoot, the shorter it may be pruned. If pruning is done before July, each cut shoot is likely to branch again. The result is a denser, fuller plant.
Winter pruning, or shaping, takes place between November and March. During this period, growth has paused and you can properly shape the plant. You restore balance and adjust the form where necessary. For example, a pyramid should have evenly balanced growth from the base of the main stem, while a crown-on-stem should remain well centred.
How should you prune correctly?
Pruning is best done by hand using sharp secateurs. This gives the most refined result. For larger plants, hedge shears may sometimes be helpful, but precision remains essential. Work calmly and gradually, following the natural lines of the plant.
Did you know…
…the art of shaping plants is called “topiary”? This practice dates back to Roman times. Plants are deliberately clipped into geometric or decorative forms. Bay is particularly well suited to this thanks to its compact growth and strong regrowth. Balls, pyramids and more complex shapes are not created in a single pruning session, but through years of consistent shaping. At our nursery, this is still done in the traditional, artisan way.
By pruning regularly, you will see your bay tree become more beautiful year after year. With attention to timing, shape and technique, your plant will grow into a true eyecatcher.
